Design Services

Design on Purpose

Grand methodologies and schemes for tackling a design project might sound impressive, even fashionable, but we are somewhat more pragmatic.

We “design on purpose,” which means that only apply design where it’s really needed, rather than liberally apply an entire “methodology” for its own sake, fleecing you of a few pennies more. We will use the appropriate tools available, even if it means simply trying something out (see TTTD). We won’t dogmatically take you through a lengthy “user research” phase just for the hell of it, nor will we insist on sticking to a particular method when something else works. Experience tells us that flexibility gets results quicker.

Whilst we enjoy and prefer (and sometimes insist) taking on whole projects from concept through to design deliverables, we recognise that innovators need help at all phases of their product or service lifecycle, which is why we offer an “a la carte” menu of services.

You’re probably keen to know the menu, so below is an indication of the sorts of activities we can undertake when helping you to design your next digital product or service.

Product Design:

Service Activities
User research Understanding who the users are and what they want to achieve – trend analysis, user-context analysis, idea validation, motivations.
Concept and strategy Exploring, defining and evaluating product concepts and strategy
Product landscape and trends Evaluating and documenting the technological and market ecosystems relevant to the product space
Product architecture Architecting and planning the technical solution
Requirements analysis Documenting the requirements, typically as user stories, plus non-functional requirements (constraints)
Interaction design Designing and documenting how the product actually works: interfaces, task flows etc.
Information architecture The information system: how the service information is structured and how it is created or sourced
Visual creative Designing the “Look and feel” of the product including all visual assets
Interface design/coding Designing and building the assets for the Graphical User Interface (GUI), including
Prototyping Building various prototypes, from paper to digital
Media production Making videos, infographics and other materials for product training, explanation and marketing purposes
Copywriting Producing the wording for the product, including Tone of Voice guides

Visual Design:

Below is an indication of the sorts of activities we can undertake when helping you with the visual aspects of an existing product or service.

Service Activities
Concept Art Illustrations and storyboards in sketch format to propose and communicate concepts for the visuals
Graphical mocks Higher fidelity renderings of the concept art
Graphics production Converting wireframes into graphical assets
Coding production (Web) For web-based products or interfaces, decomposing the mocks into HTML/CSS
Guide authoring Descriptions of the fonts, colours and design rules for the “look and feel”
Sprite/asset production Creation of visual assets for your building the product/interface
Tone of Voice Workshops and production of a Tone of Voice for the site/product/service
Infographics We use Infographics as a means to communicate rich and dense data sets.
Iconography The visual language of a product is often codified in its icons. We love designing icons!
Copywriting/editing A large part of design is choosing the right words. We take this as seriously as visual design.
Media production Making videos, infographics and other materials for product training, explanation and marketing purposes
Copywriting Producing the wording for the product, including Tone of Voice guides

It means that, as creative technologists, we can push your digital reach to wherever it needs to go, such as:

  • 3D printing for bespoke physical assets
  • Augmented reality
  • New display technologies
  • Any digital experience you can imagine – and beyond – challenge us! (But don’t call without a budget!)
